Es la búsqueda emprendida por Tommy (Hugh Jackman) para salvar a Isabel (Rachel Weisz), la mujer de la que está enamorado. Isabel escritora, lleva meses trabajando en un relato fantástico en el que un vasallo, llamado como él, Tomas, busca el elixir de la inmortalidad. Solo bebiendo del árbol de la vida vivirá eternamente. Inspirado en la historia que ella ha escrito, se sumerge en el ficticio mundo para investigar y crear un medicamento que cure el cáncer terminal que día a día mata a su amada. Tommy se verá envuelto en ambos mundos, real y fantástico, hasta aceptar en el que tiene que vivir, donde existen hechos irremediables que no se pueden cambiar.
